Structure and activity data on a large number of analogues of vasopressin have facilitated the design of substances that possess desired biological properties. An example is the synthesis of a long-acting antidiuretic molecule, 1-deamino-8-D-arginine vasopressin (desmopressin or DDAVP), which has little pressor activity and is ideal for the treatment of cranial diabetes insipidus.
Other modifications should lead to the formation of vasopressin antagonists that are suitable for the treatment of disorders associated with vasopressin excess.
